Laura Klaes: Communications/Client Relations Intern

20160613_maxyield_114Time is moving quickly at MaxYield Cooperative; I have already been here for more than a week! I am the Communications and Client Relations Intern and I am looking forward to the time ahead.

My first day kicked off by meeting other team members and learning about their roles in the cooperative. Everyone was very welcoming and thrilled to have new interns at MaxYield for the summer. The office at MaxYield is a great environment and I am excited to be a part of it.

The interns and I spent one of our first mornings at MaxYield with Tom Winkel, Safety Director at MaxYield. He told us all about what safety clothing to wear, what the protocol was around machinery and many other tips on how to stay safe on the job. Tom made safety training fun and I enjoyed listening to stories about his personal experiences, as well as his advice for us.

A few days later we started the trek out to almost all 24 of MaxYield’s locations. My mentor, Chad Meyer, took Celeste Swanson (the corporate grain accounting intern) and I to tour locations and get the lay of the land. We spent Friday touring the east locations and we were excited about the opportunity to see the inside of the massive Belmond fertilizer facility. On Monday we headed west and got a chance to tour all the recently acquired locations.

It is exciting to be at MaxYield this summer and have the opportunity to witness the growth that is occurring. Celeste and I loved traveling to parts of Iowa we hadn’t been to before, seeing all the facilities and we especially enjoyed meeting more MaxYield team members.

At the start of our second week at MaxYield, all the interns had the opportunity to attend the Kossuth and Palo Alto Economic Development Corporation’s Intern Breakfast. I was eager to hear Iowa’s Secretary of Agriculture, Bill Northey, give the keynote address at this event. He gave a great speech, encouraging the interns and mentors to be excited about the future of agriculture.

Now that I am getting started on my projects, I am increasingly enthusiastic. I will be working on some graphic design projects, working with a team on the MY Solutions Magazine and developing MaxYield’s 2017 Limited Edition Tractor Calendar. I am looking forward to the learning and networking opportunities that come along with these projects.
