Nine companies from across Iowa were recognized this week for their efforts to create healthy work places.

The Healthiest Employers of Iowa award program seeks to recognize companies throughout the state that have committed to creating a healthy workplace for their employees.

A growing focus on health and wellness and the rising cost of health insurance has prompted Iowa businesses to change how they approach employee health care benefits.

Businesses now see that beyond making for happier and healthier employees, employee wellness makes good business sense. A healthier workforce is more productive and helps to control corporate health care costs.

Through an online assessment, employers were asked a series of questions that focused on measuring six key areas: culture and leadership commitment, foundational components, strategic planning, communicating and marketing, programming and interventions, reporting and analysis.

Finalists were selected from three categories: small employer (2-99 employees), midsize employer (100-249 employees), and large employer (250 employees or more). Winners were chosen from three regions throughout the state: eastern, central and western Iowa.

The following companies that participated in the Healthiest Employers of Iowa program rose to the top as Iowa’s healthiest businesses. Their commitment to employee wellness and their approach to healthy living made them the 2014 Healthiest Employers of Iowa.

The companies were recognized at a program featuring Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds during the Iowa Association of Business and Industry’s annual conference in Cedar Rapids on Tuesday, June 10.

The Healthiest Employers of Iowa program is a joint partnership between the Business Record and the Iowa Association of Business & Industry and is sponsored by Holmes Murphy, Wellmark, Community Health Charities Iowa, Employee and Family Resources, and Principal Financial Group.
