Redefining the Law of Averages

Keith HeimBy Keith Heim, CEO

Ever heard of Jim Rohn? Born into an Idaho farming family in 1930, Rohn developed a work ethic that launched his success as an entrepreneur, speaker, author, and trailblazer in the personal development industry.

While Rohn had many famous quotes, one of his most profound statements is that you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. Makes you think, doesn’t it?

While more than five directors serve on MaxYield Cooperative’s board, I’m grateful we have so many dedicated leaders who build on each other’s strengths and help guide the future of your cooperative. Three of these incumbents were up for re-election at our annual meeting, which was held Dec. 16 at the Wild Rose Casino in Emmetsburg. Don Hejlik of Britt (East Region), David Garrelts of Emmetsburg (Central Region), and Jim Black of Algona (Central Region) were re-elected.

After the annual meeting, which included a full review of MaxYield’s audit and highlights from the last fiscal year, the MaxYield board went into their December board meeting. They selected officers for the 2015 calendar year, including:
• Howard Haas, Algona (Central Region), board chairman
• David Garrelts, Emmetsburg (Central Region), vice chairman
• Eric Marchand, Britt (East Region) secretary/treasurer

Wanted: ag leaders
I should note that all the directors up for re-election to the board ran unopposed, since no one stepped forward by the deadline to run. If you would ever like to run for the board, please let us know. As Howard Haas says, this isn’t a closed club. It’s a great opportunity to meet other forward-thinking farmers in the area, as well as well-respected ag industry leaders.

Also, if you ever have any questions or concerns about MaxYield, don’t hesitate to contact any of MaxYield’s board members.

Looking ahead
As we move forward in the current fiscal year, we’ve been running about a month behind compared to the previous fiscal year at this time. Why? We didn’t get as much agronomy work done last fall as we usually do.

Just like you, we’ll have more work to do this spring than we do in a typical year. We’ll also run behind on revenues until we get through the spring season.

While agriculture has entered more challenging times than we’ve seen in recent years, I think back to Jim Rohn’s quote about being the average of the five people you spend the most time with. I think we can redefine Rohn’s “law of averages,” since MaxYield is blessed to have so many skilled team members and progressive clients in our midst.

With your help, we are working together to make 2015 a year filled with opportunity and success.
