Soil Sampling / Crop Scouting Intern: Riley Kindwall

20160613_maxyield_205What are some responsibilities you have at MaxYield?

At MaxYield I do soil sampling for the SciMax team and I do crop scouting for my agronomist. I also help manage test plots and put up seed signs. All of these responsibilities lead to a well-rounded internship. I have had the opportunity to learn a wide variety of skills and the knowledge I have gained here will help me as I continue to grow in the ag field.

Who is your mentor and how have they helped you at MaxYield?

My mentor is Steve Schany and he has been great to work with. He is very easy to talk to and always makes sure all my questions are answered before I start a task. Steve has been a great resource to me as I continue to learn more about agronomy and some of the technology related to agriculture.

What has been your favorite part of your internship so far?

This summer I have enjoyed getting to know the people around me and having the opportunity to work with the other MaxYield team members. Everyone at MaxYield is excited to have interns around and they all want to make sure that we learn as much as we can while we are here. I am also looking forward to crop scouting and getting to learn more about weed and disease identification.

What are your career goals after graduation?

After I graduate from DMACC and Iowa State with my Ag Business degree, I hope to get involved with ag sales, whether that is on the animal side or the crop side. My time at MaxYield has given me the opportunity to gain first hand sales experience. It has been interesting to learn about how to work with clients and the different level of care that each client requires. The skills I’m learning here will definitely help me down the road as I pursue a career in sales.

What advice would you give to someone who is looking to intern with MaxYield?

I would tell a future intern that they shouldn’t be scared of not knowing what to do. Internships are all about learning and everyone at MaxYield is more than happy to answer questions and help you with whatever you need. I would also tell them that you get out of it what you put into it, so show up every day with a good attitude and a good work ethic and the hard work will pay off.
